Best Answer: Let's first clarify.

An ADSL router is an integration of an ADSL modem and a router and a 4 port network switch. This device has one RJ 11 socket and separate of this are 4 RJ 45 network ports. The RJ11 socket is for the phone company feed.

An ADSL modem differs from an ADSL router in that it has one RJ 11 socket for the phone company feed and one RJ 45 port that is used to either feed one pc or to feed the WAN port of a gateway router.

If you have an ADSL router, check carefully as it may well already have a wireless access point built in as well. If this is the case you have all the equipment you need. Proper configuration will enable you to connect laptop wirelessly and desktop via wired link.

If you have an ADSL modem (not router), you should purchase a gateway wireless router. Connect Modem feed to router WAN port (an RJ 45 port, not an RJ 11 phone sized port) and desktop to one of the 4 RJ45 LAN ports. Configure wirless and you are in business.

Trying to equip the desktop with a USB wireless port and then link laptop to desktop wireless port is unwise, it requires separate subnets, and you will find that the cost for the USB wireless port about the same if not more than the cost of the gateway wireless router. Further, you have no NAT protection for desktop and if desktop fails, neither unit accesses internet.

Re:I'll try it and see what happens. If not tomorrow I will "borrow" a couple different 3com pcmcia nics from work. For the meantime winxp is back up.

Re:For whatever reason with RH8 you may need to run netconfig from the command line and configure the nic — this will create a file called /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 which holds your information — afterwards do a 'ifup eth0' and it will perhaps pop up.

Came across this on a few laptop rh8 installs and I am not sure what is causing it. Compatible pcmcia nics that require post-installation configuration because the installer isn't prompting for anything.

Re:I've tried Madrake 9.0, RH 8.0 and SuSe 8.0… the nic is an Intel EtherExpress pro/100. Currently running Mandrake 9.0

Re:if its an intel, I'll bet you anything its compatible. what distro are you using, and what nic is it exactly?

Re:I would stick with linux, but the pcmcia nic isn't compatible. The built in nic gets configured and works perfectly fine each and everytime. But the pcmcia nic (intel pro/100) I haven't been able to get to work at all, and never gets configured correctly either.

Re:uhm, getting the nic to work shouldn't be too hard if its compatible.

Anyway, doesn't matter if its 2k or xp, not for what your doing. I'd stick with linux
