Windows Update – hide anti-spyware tool for good? [automatic windows] [quot]
Q: I have automatic Windows Update downloads have turned, and each month brings new Microsoft anti-spyware tool, it comes back, and I choose not to install this update, ever, let again.
I think every month is chosen version treated as a “new” update . Anyone found a way to always hide this thing?
Best Answer: Easy.
AVG is anti-spyware and anti-virus, but not a very good one.
Defender is anti-spyware only.
Windows Care 2 is anti-virus.
Different protections for different types of malware.

Are you confusing the Malicious Software Removal Tool with an antispyware product? Yes, it's new every month, and it isn't an antispyware tool. More info on what it removes (http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/families.mspx). Lots of worms in there. I bet the worm authors are highly annoyed
If you install the Malicious Software Removal Tool every month, nothing drastic is going to happen. You might as well do it and stop letting it bother you.
Exactly. And from what I understand of it, the tool doesn't even "install" – it just downloads and then runs a quick check after it's been downloaded to your computer. There's really no reason not to get the update as it's released.

How is this better than my current combo of anti-spyware and anti-virus? I trashed all my Norton stuff because it was big, bloated, slow, and had compatibility probs.
I installed MS's tool once when it was in beta — it ran slowly, and I thought that it installed itself and had to be uninstalled.
I'll give it a try again, though, since you all say it's not a bad thing.
They are not talking about Microsoft AntiSpyware beta. They are wondering if you are talking about the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" that comes from Windows Update. These are two different things.
OK — I understand now. Thought they were the same, and I really didn't like the Antispyware beta…
Thanks all for the clarification!

Re:How can you tell it runs slowly? It has no UI, and reports no results. Maybe it does run slowly.
There is probably some benefit in having the operating system developer sweep your system once per month looking for the worst kind of malware.

Re:I suppose you could say this "tool" is more anti-virus than anti-spyware. Since it's free, and you use MS products anyway, why not?
It's still a good idea to use a number of anti-virus/spyware products…..if something slips past one, another might catch it.
Re:I keep getting spyware entries from Mikersoft when I run Spybot S&D, is that what you guys are talking about? Sorry but my g/fs blabbing at me as I am reading through this thread. Would like some feedback though.

Re:Just think of it as a process that they push out to everyone's machine once per month, that sweeps the machine on install looking for bad stuff. Next month they code up a new version and push it out again.

Re:Microsoft AntiSpyware has its own AutoUpdate.
If you do not want it, disable the three check marks in the AutoUpdater menu (Under Options Setting) of the Utility.

Re:Well it is new every month….that's how they update new spyware definitions.
