Q: Ok I need help. I have a computer on a network. Someone new system was started with an NT4 install disc in the drive. As far as I can tell them to go to the place of the serial number and inputing stop because there is no serial. Now when the restart is in NT4 setup. Is there a way to restore the OS without reimaging the hard drive (the IT solution nations)? I need some information on the hard disk to restore and I really do not want to pull the station.

Best Answer: There are a couple of questionable items in there, and given the problem that you are experiencing I would use the following, which you can uninstall after if you so wish:

Use in this order:
Remove Restrictions Tool:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/RR…
Download from Softpedia Secure Download (RO), install, run and check all boxes then click Apply and then reboot. This tool re-enables what codecs/viruses have disabled.

Wallpaper Hijacker Removal Tool:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Wallpaper_Hija…
Note: You should hit all "Repair" buttons even though it may not say "Found!" This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Ant…
Download, install, update and select Full Scan.
Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

Spybot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl…
Download, install, update and Immunize, turn off Tea Timer then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'
Open Spybot, click on Mode, select Advanced, click on Tools then Resident and untick Resident 'Tea Timer'
Do NOT untick Resident 'SD Helper' as that is your protection.

Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition – Realtime monitoring:
http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_inst…
Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run.

SmitFraud Removal:
Firstly, download the removal tool from here:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.p…
Then follow the instructions on the page

A-Squared Free:
http://www.download.com/A-squared-Free/3…
This is not a limited version but a full tool to clean your computer from Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers and Keyloggers.
How to use:
Download, install and it will ask to check for updates, which should be allowed and will take a few minutes initially, it will then restart the program for updates to take effect. Click on Scan and ensure deep Scan is selected then click the Scan button.

Frequently, the first 4 programs solve the problem, the others are there if needed.

If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore, Right click My computer > select Properties > System Restore Tab > Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode – tap F8 during boot before Windows splash screen and select Safe Mode.

After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.

EDIT: Try running the following:
Trojan and Worm Remover:
http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/downlo…
The program will work for a full 30 days, after which it will expire.

It may also be worth uninstalling IE and reinstalling it, as in the last series of updates there was a trojan using various names included in the upates.

Re:What was the original OS? If its 2000, NT4 or Xp do a repair f the OS install.

Re:Ok I found the boot.ini file but it is directed to the winnt folder and gives the choice of regular or vga mode. This matches that of a running system. So I don't think that is the problem. Is there any other file I could check or mess with that could redirect this or is it likely that the install files overwrote the system files? By the way I am booting with a dos disk and using NTFS pro if that helps.

Re:Look again for the boot.ini file – it's probably in the root but marked hidden.

Re:ok the boot.ini file doesn't exist. there is one called "bootini.Prel T21" but that is it. it is the exact same as that of another network computer. So no go there. The filesystem is NTFS but I don't have access to a cd-burner right now. So I can't use KNoopix. I guess off to pull and slave it in another system to recover files. Didn't want to rip into computer but guess I will have to. :(

Re:Here's what I would do:
Burn an image of Knoopix (http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=44)
Boot with it
back up your data

That's as simple as it gets. Knoopix is a linux distribution that runs completely from the cd and you don't have to save anything into the hard drive. It will run on RAM. It will allow you to connect to the network and back up your data with no problem. You can read and write to Fat32 partitions, but you can only read NTFS partitions with knoopix.

Good luck and I hope this helps,
pitupepito

Let us know how your recovery of data goes.
:)

Re:Put in a win98 boot disk ( If the drive was fat32) and on the C: you will find a file called boot.ini edit that file so it does not load the NT4 setup.
