Wireless Router / Bridge to connect to my Xbox? [wireless bridge] [xbox live]

admin / August 8th, 2010/ Posted in Networking / No Comments »

Q: What kind of wireless router do I need to connect to my Xbox on . I know people have done this with a or something. Can I just use an ordinary wireless router or do I need to look for any special features when shopping for one.

Any help is appreciated.

Thx.

Best Answer: The bridge can only work with one device. You can not use a switch to get more then one device to work with the bridge.

Purchase a wireless USB adaoter for your PC and use the bridge for your xbox.

Re:Well in order to connect wirelessly you need an access point, and a Client Wireless. Since your client is a Game Box you need the Linksys WET11.

Access Point cost as much as a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

So you might as well get Wireless Cable/DSL Router, and have a "Real" network.

If the whole system is in the same room it does not matter which Wireless Router you get, wait for Sunday and get the most inexpensive you can find on next week sales.

So you need a Wireless/Cable DSL Router and a WET11.

What is your current broadband – computer network hardware?

I have a DSL connection and use the DSL modem's ethernet port to connect to my laptop by using an ethernet cable. One of my laptops has a build in ethernet port and the other one has a NIC card.

However, I don't connect both computers at the same time as I dont have a hub or a router, I only use one machine at a time.

Actually you only need an AP if your going to use a workgroup bridge like the WET11. The parent device would need to not be in bridge mode in fact. The WET11 is a client device, like a PC card for a laptop. It just is a bit more advanced and has an RJ-45 port that it passes data to.
Any 802.11b Router/AP combo will do if you want to use the WET11 on your Xbox. If the Linksys literature called the AP side of the equation a bridge, then you just have to consider the source. Bridges do not communicate with wireless clients, only other bridges in a point to point, or Point to multipoint setup. The WET11 is a workgroup bridge, not a standard . It can get confusing, but just get yourself an AP, or router/ap combo if you need the routing functions, along with the wet11 and a patch cable, and you'll be fine.

Oh I get it, AP is "access point" if I am not mistaken. Anyway can you still recommed a specific product for this situation.

This may sound weird but what is an "AP"? Can you recommend any particular product for my situation, I basically want to connect my laptop and my xbox using a single wireless source (Router or Bridge), so will the WET 11 do the job? Or do I need something else?

Re:Thx.

So what I got from going through the features for Linksys WET 11 was that I need something that functions both as a router and an ethernet bridge.

Are there any other options in terms of brands, is there a particular protocol that it needs to support in order for the ethernet bridge to worl?
