Q: screenshot (http://users.stargate.net/ ~ mguyel / popup.JPG)

These things are about to appear once a day over the past two months. They seemed to start shortly after I RealPlayer, so I tried to delete but it is clear that they have not stopped. Ive checked everything I can think of. NAV and do not find anything, nor Ad-Aware or any other spyware / adware cleaners.

WTF these pop-ups, and how do I find out where they come from?

Best Answer: There are no released MacOs X viruses. You do not have a virus. Odds are you have your pop up ad blocker turned off in Safari or Firefox. Just turn it back on.
There are three released MacOs X malwares. To get one of them, you have to agree to download it, agree to install it, and put your admin password in twice. One is a fake porn viewer, one is a fake poker game, one is a fake Mac anti-virus. If you have not downloaded any of those or installed them, you have no problems. Eventually you will need an anti-virus, but since there are 118,000 Windows viruses and only 3 Mac malwares, you don't at this time.

Re:I use active ports to keep an eye on my connections if I am watching for trojans or to find the ip of pop-ups.
You can download it at http://www.ntutility.com/freeware.html

Re:Yes Zone Alarm has ip logging.

the messanger service was very poorly thought out By MS.. but Zone Alarm blocks it nicely.. :)

Just turn off the messanger service. You don't need zonealarm to get rid of the .I realize that, but I'd like to find out where these messages are originating from. I get between 2 and 5 of them a day (have a static IP), and I'd like to file abuse complaints w/ the senders' ISPs if at all possible.

guy, thanks for the port blocking suggestion. I would not have thought of that.

Re:I have a firewall router, and when I set up a DMZ for my File sharing box I started getting those too. I found out that is you block certain ports you can get rid of them as well.

ports 135-139 and 445 are the ones that are used, so don't spend money on a program to block them.

while on the subject, can the XP firewall close/setalth certain ports?

Re:Thanks for the replies. I'm going to download and install zone alarm, but is there any way to track the IP that is sending the spam w/o using zone alarm? Does the messenging service log the IP that messages originate from?

Re:Disable 'Messenger' in Control Panel …. Admin Tools…. Services.

And it wasn't meant for spam.

Edit: Also in FAQ's (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=153) if I didn't tell you how to disable it correctly.

Re:Go to www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com) and download their latest version of ZoneAlarm. This is a no-cost program to a private user for the lite version, or you may purchase the full version for a very reasonable amount.;)
