XP is a POS . I can not use disk [floppy drive] [floppy disk]

admin / October 10th, 2010/ Posted in Operating Systems / No Comments »

Question: Any idea why XP says my works well and I can not use . Error reading the disc and it would restart and cause memory dump.
This FD works well to start and run fine on the same computer 98SE.
? ? ?

Re:EDIT: Ideas had already been tried. :)

Re:Had a similar problem with ACPI. Reading the floppy would BSOD the system with XP installed with ACPI installed and using sound card drivers for Win2K.

My suggestion is to do a fresh install, not an upgrade, and stick to using only drivers certified for XP.

Re:dont be so hard on him , i mean no it probably isnt anything inherent in xp .. but eh he's just frustrated because of something that should "just work" .. he's already said it works fine in xp .. so this

<< psycho hit it on the head.explanation, ypu may have to switch a few of the card around to different slots. try a different floppy, etc, check connections/bios. Not OS related for sure >>

probably isnt the problem .. since it works fine in 98se, it obviously has *something* to do with the os .. just my thoughts ..

Re:I realize I may have come off as being a bit "harsh"…….I worked on this for hours.
I installed XP on the same computer as 98SE just on different hard drives and booted to the OS of choice through hardware(ie hd cable disconnected etc).
The FDD worked fine in 98SE. Another FDD in this computer didn't work in XP either.

Thanks to some good responses at least now I have some good suggestions on things to check out.

That's why I posted the question/rant………….AT has a lot of members and their expertise is tremendous.

Thanks for the help.

Re:I had this problem when I was running Inoculate Antivirus. My would not be recognized by XP until I delayed Inoculate from loading for 20 seconds. I think you are having a software problem. Try preventing everything from loading at startup and then add items one by one until you find the culprit.

Re:OK, I had a problem with XP and my floppy, would get a device error or dump when accessing floppy (exactly the same problems as guy) – turns out it was the beta drivers for my Aureal soundcard!!! I removed those and installed the drivers that came with XP, and no more floppy problem.

So now I now that a sound card DRIVER can conflict with a floppy. Remember that almost anything is possible. Troubleshoot one thing at a time.

I had to format, then reinstall XP, and after every new thing was installed I checked the operation of the . Finally narrowed it down to the beta sound card driver.

Re:i'd remove it from device manager and reboot, maybe it will reinstall the propper drivers correctly.. disable autoprotect on your antivirus software before doing so (if this applies) because a/v software running in the background while installing drivers can cause drivers to be installed incorrectly… (dont allow autoprotect to run on startup as that is when the drivers will be installed)..

a couple of times XP has (for some strange reason) showed 2 floppy drives in my computer (a:\ & b:\).. i just went into device manager, disabled & uninstalled them both, then rebooted… all was creamy after a reboot.

also, i wish everyone would keep in mind that winxp is a new OS, it isnt going to be perfect.. not for a while (if ever).. and i personally dont cut down microsoft for it being what it is… shyt, look at what goes into an OS, and look at the bizzillion diferent types of hardware and software XP (or any new OS) has to accomidate for in order to get people to use their OS.. far too many variables to expect perfection so soon.. look at win98, it was a pain in the arse untill win98se was released!

i've had a tonn of problems with winxp, but i have kept using it because that is how i learn the OS (thats how i learned every OS)… if you want something that works, go back to what you were using before xp.. if you like xp, deal with it… you arent going to figure out how to maintain a stable OS if you just complain when something goes wrong… you cant blame anyone but yourself (IMHO)

good luck

Re:It could be your bios interacting badly with the OS…happened with early ECS K7S5A bioses w/ Win2K if I remember correctly. Check to see if there are any bios updates from your manufacturer. Also, look in the bios and make sure that nothing else is using IRQ6 (traditionally the assigned IRQ for floppy drives); every now and then the IRQ assignments can be set accidentally, causing "interesting" problems to occur.

Re:psycho hit it on the head.explanation, ypu may have to switch a few of the card around to different slots. try a different floppy, etc, check connections/bios. Not OS related for sure

Re:I guess that means you don't have a clue either…..?

I guess that means we are in the same boat.

Re:hmm… seems to work for everyone else here except you, so that is definitely not an OS problem.

Instead of blaming OS I think you should blame yourself.

Re:That wasn't much help.

What hardware conflict? What would conflict with a FDD?
What driver conflict? Everything else works fine. A FDD is pretty basic, you mean I need to download the newest FDD drivers for XP?

My assumption is…….a FDD is so basic that any operating system should support it without massive amounts of tweaking, correcting or searching.

Re:Sounds like a hardware or driver conflict.

Just because you're having problems with it doesn't mean it's XP's fault or that XP is a POS. Maybe you should consider a new title for your thread…..
