XP Pro machine hangs at “open door” to the dial to the Internet . [dial up connection] [thanks in advance]
Q: Does anyone have an idea about this? Its new to me since I do not use dial-up more When you click the shortcut to the dial-up connection, says open “port” and not anything else to do but hang the OS. Thanks in advance!

Re:That's what I was thinking- the modem is built in to the motherboard and I can't find any drivers for it on the 'net since I don't know what board and what modem it is. Real pain.

Re:It is a driver issue since it occurs with some Winmodems.
Broadband is the way to go if they want to pay for it. =)

Re:It worked for a while and then just crapped out, so I don't think it is a driver issue. XP doesn't have a driver for the modem, so that's not the issue as well. I think I'll just move them to broadband instead of keeping up with this-

Re:This happened to me w/ a conexant Trendnet TFM565 PCI modem. I tried their beta drivers, I tried the original XP drivers. It does the same thing both times. I simply replaced the modem with something that doesn't have the issue.

Re:Hi Ya Eric:)
You may want to verify the drivers are co0mpatable with XP. I've found XP install alot of modems, especially connexant chipsets, automatically, but uses the wrong drive. (XP incorrectly identifies the chip and loads drivers for another product, EX; Modem is Gneeric HSF 56 K PCI, XP will install it as a BestData and you will be able to run diagnostics on it fine but it will never dial out>)
Best thing to do is replace the drivers with Known compatable XP driver from the net.

Re:Thanks, the guy has AIM and MSN running but that's it. I tried killing everything and it still did it. Thanks!

Re:Rowcroft,
This could possibly be caused by failed hardware. However, more often than not, the problem is software. Check your systray for anything running other than the clock, your anti-virus, maybe and instant message program or two, etc. The biggest culprit with this problem is the HotSync program for Palm Pilots, but there are others as well. Try closing out these programs and give it another shot.
